Community Enterprise

This page is dedicated to raising awareness of community initiatives which enterprising individuals have worked hard to get off the ground in Crewkerne.

From time to time we'll focus on local projects - people doing their bit in a not-for-profit way to make the world a better place!

Enterprise House is pleased to have been behind the creation of the Crewkerne website www.CrewkerneTown.co.uk

From an idea on a misty January morning in 2005, the plan to promote positive news about the area and - in the words of its founder - to ‘back Crewkerne business’ was soon well underway. CrewkerneTown.co.uk went live in March 2005 with a local news and events page, followed quickly by the Business Directory – a comprehensive listing of all local businesses, many of which took advantage of subscriber box entries offering contact details, an image and a short introductory blurb. Alongside the Business Directory came the online Crewkerne Community Directory (a service free to any group with not-for-profit purposes) which quickly grew to over fifty local entries.

After consultation and publicity in the local Press, the website created the online Market Place - a unique cluster of small businesses with their own self-editing web pages linked directly to the town site. The first of the additional community information pages for the Crewkerne Town Council and the Crewkerne Chamber of Commerce quickly followed, meaning that individuals anywhere in the world may now find out about the area at the click of a mouse!

The founding purpose of CrewkerneTown.co.uk was to create an independently owned and regularly updated resource which is highly responsive and promotes an exclusively positive message about Crewkerne and neighbouring villages. It will continue to develop and grow as time and budget permits.

New business has relocated into the town as a result of reading about Crewkerne on the site; the website is receiving a regular and increasing number of hits each month alongside regular local Press coverage and the site has been linked by many local organisations.

Welcoming the enterprise, David Laws MP said “I welcome the CrewkerneTown.co.uk initiative, I wish all those involved the best and hope that many people, both local and visitors, will find the website useful."
